Presentation of the Yvonne Jenkins Memorial Award
19 August 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm
The winner of the Yvonne Jenkins Memorial Award for the best essay on the topic “My Grandfather” will be announced at a function at the Society’s Resource Centre on Saturday 19th August 2023.
Yvonne Jenkins was the society’s convenor and president for many years. A talented artist and author, Yvonne inspired many members to write the stories of their ancestors as well as their own stories. The award is held annually in her honour.
Yvonne’s aim was that we should all record the stories of the people in our family before these stories are lost forever. Yvonne enjoyed collecting information on families and family stories and had recorded many over the years. Her book “Bowenfels, People, Places, Past and Present” was the last of many books which she authored and illustrated from information gathered over 30 years of research. Before the presentation of the award Jan Saundercock will present a talk/slideshow titled “My Grandfather London to Putney via Clydebank”.
Jan’s Grandfather was born in London emigrated to Australia, lived through two World Wars and the depression. He was a ‘keeper’ of paperwork and photos from which form the basis of his story and led to some other interesting discoveries about his life and that of his family.
