The Black Gold Motel was originally the Wallerawang School, built in 1881 along with an adjoining residence. The property was purchased by its current owners Robert and Linda Cluff in 1994. Through a series of imaginative transformations, Black Gold Motel was created – a clean, comfortable, up-to-date, award-winning motel that guests often describe as a real “hidden gem”. The walls carry echoes of the region’s mining history. The name ‘Black Gold’ is derived from the local coal mining industry. The coal was nicknamed ‘black gold’. In recognition of the property’s history, many rooms are named after school teachers & local mines to celebrate the rich history of the area.
The property was recently ranked in the top 1% in the world for service and #5 in Australia. Black Gold Motel offers an array of award-winning, boutique accommodation styles to complement your travel situation. We pride ourselves on having a variety of immaculately clean, unique, and cosy spaces. Equally welcoming is the warm hospitality provided by our team at this privately-owned, family-run hotel. Many of our rooms are old classrooms superbly transformed into short or long stay accommodation for corporate travel, weekend getaway, or overnight stopover.
The Crib Room Restaurant & Lamp Room Lounge Bar is the pride of the local community which is reflected in its consistent #1 ranking on Trip Advisor. The adjoining Lamp Room Lounge & Bar is the perfect spot for pre or post-dinner drinks, with its well-stocked bar and large windows overlooking the beautiful grounds and gardens of the former Wallerawang Public School.
