Newnes was once a thriving oil shale works and town. At its peak in 1911 some 1600 people lived at Newnes. The Ruins Walk of the former shale oil refinery tells the story of this once thriving industry. The Newnes Hotel (1907) is the only building left standing and its museum gives an impression of the life at Newnes 100 years ago.
