The Wizard Express at the Zig Zag Railway

Step aboard the most enchanting train in the Blue Mountains! This spring, the Zig Zag Railway transforms into the Zig Zag Academy of Steam & Sorcery, where witches, wizards, and magical folk of all ages are invited to begin their studies in the spellbinding world of railways and enchantment.
Your adventure begins at Clarence Station, the grand gateway to the Academy. All guests arrive by car and enjoy free on-site parking just steps from the station building. Inside the precinct you’ll find our café serving potions and treats, plus our gift shop brimming with magical mementos to take home.
Once you’ve checked in, the magic begins. Every guest will be welcomed by our Academy guides and prepared for the Sorting Ceremony. Gather beneath the glittering glow of the Magic Sorting Lantern, a mystical heirloom said to hold the wisdom of railway sorcerers past. The Lantern will reveal your Academy House – will you join Whitton, Higgins, Belmore, Thornton, or Zolfel? Each house has its own proud history and magical spirit, and once sorted you’ll carry their colours throughout your day.
With your Academy House decided, it’s time to board the Wizards Express, a genuine heritage steam train. Your enchanted train ride winds through sandstone cuttings, across magnificent viaducts, and into dark, echoing tunnels where shadows flicker and magic stirs. Families and fans alike can gaze from the windows at sweeping valley views while enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of a working steam locomotive.
But the train ride is only the beginning. Throughout the day, the Clarence precinct becomes the Academy itself, hosting magical classes where students of all ages can test their skills and imagination. Your timetable may include:
• Ancient Runes – uncover the secrets of railway glyphs and enchanted inscriptions.
• Care of Magical Creatures – meet marvellous beasts (both real and imagined) that call the mountains home.
• Herbology – explore the magical power of plants
Trackology – the magical science of railways,
• Pyromantics – discover the art of fire, flame, and steam.
• Potions – stir, mix, and create colourful concoctions.
• Zuggle Studies – learn the ways of ordinary folk, and how to pass unnoticed in the non-magical world.
